2021 Premier Sale Report

By Paul McAvoy

18th September 2021

Rugby Farmers Mart, Stoneleigh Park

Judge : Mr J M Jeyes

It was good the see the return of the show classes at this year’s Premier Show and Sale where the Supreme Championship was once again awarded to an entry from B & H Thomas and Sons.  This year it was the turn of their shearling ram Celyn Yayr sired by the 2019 Supreme Champion Celyn Victor, selling for 500gns to the judge J Jeyes.  Ruhi Hamilton’s 2nd placed shearling ram Amaroo Smart topped the 2021 sale selling to 700gns with her other entry Amaroo Stout selling for 300gns.

Leading the ram lambs in the sale ring was Mrs J Evan’s 2nd placed Springwood Flynn at 500gns and S Brodie’s reserve champion entry Brockhall Thor at 380gns.   Hoggeston Gruffalo, a Signet recorded entry from HN & GE Morris & Family, reached 300gns with Springwood Filbert following up at 280gns.

With a reduced catalogue this year there was stronger competition amongst buyers for the females entries resulting in 100% clearance.  Leading the females was Mrs J Evan’s Champion Ewe, a shearling ewe selling for 295gns. Two shearling ewes from N & C Williams, the reserve female champion and their 3rd placed entry, both sold for 270gns. Another ewe from Mrs Evans made 192gns, one from S Brodie reached 180gns followed by three from J Bradley’s flock at 170gns each.

There was one aged ewe forward on the day sold by Mrs A Sanders for 205gns.

Ewe lamb entries were from two vendors J Bradley and M Gibson & Family with J Bradley’s first trio taking 1st 2nd and 3rd in the ewe lamb class and the Ling cup for the best three ewe lambs selling for 120gns and his second group selling for 110gns.  M Gibson and family’s lambs peaked at 98gns.

The Phillip Smith Tankard for the most points in the show classes was awarded this year to J Bradley.

Our thanks go to the judge J M Jeyes, to steward Jayne Jones and to RFM for their hard work on the day with grateful thanks to the vendors and buyers who have supported our Premier Show and Sale.

About the Wiltshire Horn Sheep Society

The Wiltshire Horn Sheep Society exists to promote, preserve and improve the Wiltshire Horn breed, to define the breed standard and record pedigrees. It came into being on the 13th January 1923, when 40 farmers and breeders met in the Grand Hotel, Northampton to put the  breed onto “sound pedigree lines”. The meeting concluded with the establishment of  the “Wiltshire or Western Horn Sheep Breeders Association”, together with the flock book, a constitution and a managing council. 22 attendees joined on the spot and paid their first annual subscription: 1 guinea ! Today the Society organises … Read More
