2022 North Wales Show & Sale Results

By Paul McAvoy

The show winners were in demand in a well supported and successful auction at Gaerwen Auction Centre this year.

The Show Champion,”Cynfarwy Victor” a 2022 born ram lamb from R.J. Thomas & Sons, met with keen bidding and eventually sold for 1,040gns. The auctioneer believes this to be a new record price for a Wiltshire Horn at this sale.

The second placed ram lamb also from R.J. Thomas & Sons, “Cynfarwy Viking”, sold at 730gn, after “Cynfarwy Vicar” the third placed ram lamb sold for 400gns.

Other rams sold to 430gns for “Glasgraig Oscar” a shearling from W.D. Edwards and 400gns for “Trefri Wild” another shearling from R. Owen. The senior rams all sold between 220gns and 400gns.

This positive demand continued with the ewes. The Champion female, a Trefri ewe from R. Owen sold for 190gns and the first placed shearling ewe from Mrs A.V. & Mrs J.W. Brigg sold for 170gns, although the highest priced shearling ewe was from the Glasgraig flock of W.D. Edwards at 185gns.

The Society is grateful to our judge Mrs Ruhi Pugh, to Geraint Evans and his team at the Gaerwen Auction Centre and to all the people, sellers and buyers alike, from Anglesey and from further afield, who combine to make the North Wales Show and Sale both possible and successful.

The Wiltshire Horn Sheep Society exists to promote, preserve and improve the Wiltshire Horn breed, to define the breed standard and record pedigrees. It came into being on the 13th January 1923, when 40 farmers and breeders met in the Grand Hotel, Northampton to put the  breed onto “sound pedigree lines”. The meeting concluded with the establishment of  the “Wiltshire or Western Horn Sheep Breeders Association”, together with the flock book, a constitution and a managing council. 22 attendees joined on the spot and paid their first annual subscription: 1 guinea ! Today the Society organises … Read More
