Become A Member

At the time of first purchase, new members should use the links on this page to either apply online or complete a membership application form and send it to the Society Secretary together with the relevant fees.  The fees comprise the current years annual subscription fee and a one-off prefix registration fee.

  • Annual Society Subscription £40
  • Registration of Prefix Fee £50

If you’ve been a member of the Society before and want to rejoin, this page also has the links you will need.

New owners should satisfy themselves that any animals purchased have been correctly registered. Should you require confirmation that the stock you wish to buy is registered please contact the Society Secretary.

For the WHSS to recognise the pedigree of any sheep it MUST carry WHSS tag information, displaying:

WHSS flock number of the breeder -e.g. 1309
The year of birth -e.g. 20 for 2020
An individual consecutive number

For animals born in 2020 or later WHSS tags would read 1309 20 01, 1309 20 02, 1309 20 03 ,etc.
For animals born in 2019 or earlierWHSS tags would read 1309 01 19, 1309 02 19, 1309 03 19 ,etc.

WHSS information can be added to the DEFRA tags provided that it is clearly separate from the official identity number and the two numbers can’t be confused with each other. Separate WHSS tags may be used if preferred but to avoid confusion with official identifiers, these can’t be yellow, black or red. They must be printed not handwritten.

Prefix

When applying for membership, you will be asked to select a flock prefix. This is the name by which your flock will be known. It will also form the first part of the name of any rams your breed and register with the society. The Society has the right to refuse a suggested new flock prefix if it is considered too similar to an existing prefix. In the unlikely event of that happening, you will be invited to select an alternative. The society will ensure that your flock prefix will be both original and unique to you and will never be used by any other member.

About the Wiltshire Horn Sheep Society

The Wiltshire Horn Sheep Society exists to promote, preserve and improve the Wiltshire Horn breed, to define the breed standard and record pedigrees.
