2019 Premier Show & Sale Report

By Paul McAvoy

14th September 2019
Rugby Farmers Mart, Stoneleigh Park
Judge : Mr George Morris

Leading the trade at the 2019 Premier Show and Sale was Celyn Victor the supreme and male champion from B & H Thomas & Sons, Anglesey bought by Mrs C.S. White for 1010gns. The 2017 born ram, already crowned the 2019 National Show champion, was sired by the 2018 Premier Show and Sale male champion Celyn Steward.  B & H Thomas and family dominated the ram classes taking first prizes in all the male classes including the group of three ram lambs as well as first, second and third places in the ram lamb class and first and third places in the shearling ram class. The reserve male champion was Celyn Wayne from D Thomas and family’s flock.  J M Jeyes and family’s shearling ewe took the female championship, adding to their success in the show ring this year, with the reserve female championship going to Claire Shepherd’s ewe lamb.  Mr E A Black took home the Hope cup for the group of three ewe lambs.

With a change of order for the rams in the catalogue this year shearling rams were sold first, led by the reserve male champion selling for 470gns followed by HN & GE Morris and family’s Signet recorded Hoggeston Danger at 440gns, Celyn Wyn, another ram from D Thomas and family at 420gns and two entries at 400gns, Lawford Kenilworth from J M Jeyes & family and N & T Hodgkinson’s second placed ram Souldrop Regal.  Topping the ram lambs was Miss R G Hamilton’s Amaroo Ruan at 420gns with Mrs F R Flitzgerald’s Gawcombe Ardent and B & H Thomas’ Celyn Xray both selling for 380gns.

Ewes achieved a 99% clearance with shearling ewes selling to 260gns for Mrs J Evan’s third placed ewe.  The champion ewe from J M Jeyes and family sold for 250gns with another at 240gns from the same flock.  Claire Shepherd’s reserve champion topped the ewe lambs with the hammer falling at 180gns.

Our thanks go to our judge George Morris, steward Sarah Cowle and to Tom Wrench and his team for their hard work on the day with sincere thanks to the vendors and buyers who have supported our Premier Show and Sale. It was especially pleasing to see new vendors doing well in the show ring and in the sale.  Thank you everyone.

Teresa Hodgkinson

About the Wiltshire Horn Sheep Society

The Wiltshire Horn Sheep Society exists to promote, preserve and improve the Wiltshire Horn breed, to define the breed standard and record pedigrees. It came into being on the 13th January 1923, when 40 farmers and breeders met in the Grand Hotel, Northampton to put the  breed onto “sound pedigree lines”. The meeting concluded with the establishment of  the “Wiltshire or Western Horn Sheep Breeders Association”, together with the flock book, a constitution and a managing council. 22 attendees joined on the spot and paid their first annual subscription: 1 guinea ! Today the Society organises … Read More
